FAQs
What is Paper Heroes?
We’re a collective of amateur and professional creatives helping each other make space for creativity. We meet monthly for a creative circle, explore creative prompts weekly, and share the varied work made by our members with the wider world.
Can anyone join?
Yes! There are only two rules: absolute respect for your fellow community members, and no apologizing for anything you make.
How much does it cost?
It’s free!
How do I sign up?
Sign up for the substack (this is where official invites and information are shared) and follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.
What’s included?
Creative Circle - The first Wednesday of every month — we meet! This is our creative circle where the good stuff goes down. The session is 90 minutes and begins at 7pm ET. You have the option to meet in person or via our virtual hangout (they’re connected). Make sure to sign up for emails to get the links.
Weekly Prompts - We’ll share a prompt every Wednesday. It can be a word, sentence, question, image, that’s totally up to us sorry we’re your capricious but benevolent dictators now. Responses can be in the form of poetry, sketches, prose, an audio file of your sound collage, that’s totally up to you. Revolt against your benevolent overladies.
Member Work - We’ll share dispatches from our creative circle, responses to the weekly prompt, and other professional/ personal projects made by our members. Tag us or email us to share your work!
Other Magic - Some of our members are looking for more formal feedback on their work (hello crit!). We organize creative critiques as well as connect members who are working on similar projects. Email us to learn more about how you can submit or review.
“Who’s running the show here?” - Brink
It’s us — Meg and Lillian! You’ll get to know us through our emails, shared-work, and eccentric musings via the creative circle. For now, think of us as those friends who get the dance floor going at your party.
What can I expect from the monthly creative circle?
We meet once a month, in-person in Brooklyn and online via google meet, for a 90 minute creative work session. While we do open each session with a creative spark, the majority of the session is yours to play with. You can spend the time journaling, writing poetry, sketching, sculpting, screaming, songwriting, or anything else that calls to you. Some of us may use that time to make progress on more formal personal projects, but most of us are there just to explore our creative side. Each session ends with an opportunity to share your work with the group, should you choose to.
OMG I’m terrified.
We know! You are not required to share your work with the group — we’re your dictators, not your 8th grade English teachers — but we sure would love to see it/hear it/smell it. The worse the better! Share your gross messy corny graceless failed tries.
What supplies do I need?
That’s up to you! Bring whatever tools you use to express yourself. For many people that’s a notebook and some form of writing or sketching tool.
What if I have to arrive late/ leave early / do a thing mid-session?
Totally fine! Just try not to disrupt the group as you enter/exit.
Okay but I’m not a real creative…
Are you sure? We don’t believe you.
